Toys in the Attic (1963)
Nominated for 1 Academy Award:
Best Costume Design, Black-and-White
Could you imagine a poster like this in 2020? And no, the
film is not about brutality against women, nor is that scene representative for
the film, so it’s a stupid choice.
I was in the mood for a Geraldine Page film I’d never seen, so
this was decided on the spot. It’s based on a successful play, and I knew very
little else going in, and I wasn’t disappointed, even though it’s not a great
movie. It’s very stagey, a bit too much, and a bit simple with its approach,
but the acting is ok, and there was nothing in it to really upset me. 😊
Geraldine is just fine (rightfully not nominated for Best Actress - she played
a role like this to greater success in Summer and Smoke), and it’s Wendy
Hiller who outstages them all, and probably would’ve deserved an Oscar
nomination, in Supporting, where she was campaigned, though she’s co-lead.
Recommended only for theater fans or die-hard fans of old
Hollywood.
I give it: 7/10
