It’s hard to ignore the massive lack of chemistry between Matthau and Streisand. Even if you disregard the urban legends about their conflict on set, you can see there’s no spark between them on screen. Matthau is 49 going on 60, Babs is 27.

While the character development doesn’t hold up, the film is visually stunning and looked gorgeous on Blu-ray. The musical numbers are sometimes too long, but I couldn’t deny the big Hello Dolly moment - rightfully iconic. The costumes are perfect.

I give it: 7/10

  1. I saw Bette Midler play Dolly on Broadway in 2018 and thought she was perfect. Then I watched clips of the Streisand film and it didn't work for me.

Momentarily daydreamed about what a remake starring Midler would look like, but that would never happen.

Welcome back diva, it sure has been awhile!

    1. I think you should totally see it, at least for the big musical number towards the end, the iconic dress & all. Clearly she's too young, but with the right partner (someone born in the 1930s maybe) it would've worked for Streisand. She sings it beautifully. :)

Yes, it's been a while. Blame it on tennis.
