Sometimes the reputation of one technical achievement
of a film rightfully outshines the film itself. 😛 What I mean is I saw this again, because I
was humming Streisand’s The Way We Were (which is an amazing song!), and
here I am, partly dissatisfied because the film doesn’t live up to the… song
and the reputation of the ending.
Because the ending really isn’t as memorable as you’d think,
come on. And just like the film itself, it feels poorly directed, with too much
unexplored potential. What I did like other than the song, and the music, was
Streisand’s casting. It’s not a remarkable performance, but she’s right for the
part. Way more so than Redford, who is terribly miscast (they should have gone
with Ryan O’Neal! who does rich & handsome so well) and brings no energy,
no nothing. Therefor, the love story was quite unconvincing.
I give it: 5.5/10
