I must be in some kind of a musicals phase. Also, having a
constant need of revisiting films I saw 10+ years ago, which is a healthy thing
to do, as you grow older, shift your preferences and also forget a lot of details.
For me, except for the main song, Sweeney Todd is not
a musical I’d hum along to. The songs are fine, but, in my honest opinion, not
the reason to see the film. I watched it again for Depp and especially for Tim
Burton. He creates quite a fascinating universe here, and the film is dark and
very bloody, and that’s important because it feels right for the material. It’s
gloomy, but also gorgeous. The cinematography is superb, and so are the
costumes, the production design, the makeup. Depp is fine, typical casting for
Burton, but he doesn’t go far enough in the more emotional scenes and he’s not
as expressive as he could be. Helena’s acting abilities are a plus, her singing
maybe less so?
Unfortunately, the film doesn’t maintain the energy of the
first half, and it all ends up a bit rushed towards the end, but it’s a great
achievement for all aspects below-the-line. I like it, but I don’t love it.
I give it: 8/10
It's been quite some time since I've watched this as well (might've been in the weeks ahead of DDL winning for There Will Be Blood?) but I remember really liking Depp. He might've been my second choice in 2007, but who knows how I'd feel nowadays. It's a shame Depp's career / personal life has netted out the way it did in the last decade.
RăspundețiȘtergereI've been thinking a lot about revisiting films from a decade ago as well! :)
I too thought I would've liked him more, or at least as much as I did the first time. And he is good, just not super great. Nowhere near DDL, of course. And I also liked Clooney, if I remember correctly. Hated Viggo. And never seen Elah, cause it looks super tragic.
ȘtergereHe did almost get nominated for Black Mass, so it wasn't a completely wasted decade. :) And he is great in Fantastic Beasts 2, one of my favs from 2018.
