None But the Lonely Heart (1944)
Nominated for 4 Academy Awards:
Best Actor: Cary Grant
Best Supporting Actress: Ethel Barrymore (WON)
Best Editing
Best Music, Scoring of a Dramatic or Comedy Picture
It’s strange, and rather unfortunate, that Cary Grant’s two
Oscar nominations came for dramatic roles, instead of the comedies he’s so
known for nowadays. I say it’s unfortunate because None But the Lonely Heart
is not a good film, nor does he deliver a strong performance. I’ve read he was
grossly miscast compared to the novel, but that’s not my problem, since I think
all characters had been aged for the film and it made sense. The problem is the
role simply isn’t much, with a lot of screentime, but a bit of a soulless performance
and a character we don’t end up caring for. I am sure Cary has his fault in all
of this, by shying away from more impactful, dramatic acting choices, but there
wasn’t much on paper to begin with.
A veteran of the stage, Ethel Barrymore came back to the
screen after a long absence and won the Oscar for playing the dying mother. I
was afraid it might be more of a career win, but she does give a good
performance, with some subtle moments and an Oscar-scene at the end.
Otherwise, the film is pretty boring and lacking in energy,
excitement or even a captivating story.
I give it: 5.5/10
