I guess I hadn’t seen this in about 10 years or more, and
what a pleasure it was to revisit it. Sure, it’s up my alley, taking place during
a fascinating era, on that gorgeous property, with beautiful set decoration and
cinematography. But it works because the screenplay is amazing and it’s
directed by the fabulous and underrated James Ivory.
There isn’t much happening in terms of conflict, but it had
my attention from the first moment. Hopkins gives one of his best performances
and it truly is his movie. Even though the focus is not on her, it’s a great
reminder how good Emma Thompson is in everything she does. Her chemistry with
Hopkins is strong here, more so than in Howards End. Their final scene
together is so emotional.
What a misfortune for this beautiful film to be released in
1993, the same year as Schindler’s List and The Piano. All
all-time favourite.
I give it: 9.5/10
