Starting Over (1979)
Nominated for 2 Academy Awards:
Best Actress: Jill Clayburgh
Best Supporting Actress: Candice Bergen
Starting Over isn’t a film with a clear vision on
where it’s going or who these characters really are, but the actors, especially
the two ladies, elevate the material, making it interesting and fun. Burt
Reynolds is just fine, he isn’t given much to do. Jill Clayburgh is the star, taking
a silly character and giving it real emotion, humanizing her, and ultimately
just delivering a great performance, more so than I expected.
I’ve heard criticism of Candice here, but she does what the
role requires: looking pretty (she is gorgeous!) and bringing just a bit of
humour. Her big singing moment must’ve read so stupid on paper, but I giggled
because she made it funny. It’s a nice romantic film, satisfying if you don’t
go in with high expectations.
I give it: 7.5/10
