Batman (1989) - 2nd time
Nominated for 1 Academy Award:
Best Art Direction-Set Decoration (WON)
Other that some lowkey attempts in the 1940s and 1960s, I
guess this is considered the first real Batman feature film. If you’d look at
it in the context of 1989, you could say it was quite impressive, almost
sensational. But it’s hard, as a modern viewer, to ignore Christopher Nolan’s
excellent adaptations, that really took it to a different level, especially
technically and giving the films mood and style.
What I didn’t remember was how much screentime Jack
Nicholson has, he could easily be considered the lead. His performance is very
out there, and it’s not bad we see so much of him, but this takes away from the
Bruce Wayne character that ends up seriously underwritten, underdeveloped and
just bland. It’s a film that mostly works on the surface and nowadays fails to
impress.
I give it: 6.5/10
