Sleeping Beauty (1959) - 3rd time?
Nominated for 1 Academy Award:
Best Music, Scoring of a Musical Picture
It’s an interesting experience to go back to Disney films,
as an adult. You really do see them with totally different eyes. It’s actually
something I plan on doing quite often, revisiting Disney stuff. Clearly, I have
a thing for Maleficent, she’s the reason I wanted to see this again. Aurora is
missing in action for most of the film and there really is no focus on her. It’s
about the fairies, and the meanest of them all.
There are parts that fall a bit flat or take too long (Aurora
meeting Phillip, the two kings talking), and they’re mostly close to the middle
of the film. Where it does pick up is the last half an hour, that’s the part with
all the action, and then it works better. The music, a lot of it is Tchaikovsky,
is of course superb. Sleeping Beauty was, at its time, the most
expensive animation ever attempted, and it took many years to make, and it does
look good.
I give it: 8/10
