The Ladykillers (1955)
Nominated for 1 Academy Award*:
Best Original Screenplay
(*the film
was nominated as a 1956 release)
If it wasn’t for the very late hour, I would probably write
more explaining why I really liked this film. I’ve known of its existence probably
ever since I started being interested in movies, it’s that accomplished in
modern times, and yet I’d never seen it. It’s an excellent British comedy, with
the specific British humour of the 1950s. It’s simple, but a trailblazer in
many ways, through the construction of the story and the comedy.
Alec Guinness is quite excellent, but so is the whole cast,
and how nice to see a young Peter Sellers. It’s a solid comedy, that feels quite
ahead of its time.
I give it: 9/10
