Blithe Spirit (1945)
Nominated for 1 Academy Award*:
Best Effects, Special Effects (WON)
(*nominated
as a 1946 film)
Back when it opened, this adaptation of Noel Coward’s hit
play was not a success. The author didn’t like it, the public didn’t care to
see it. But over the years, it’s gained more respect, probably also because it’s
a David Lean film & all. As with many films I watch for the first time, I
didn’t love it, but I liked it. There are technical achievements related to it
that cannot be denied.
The cinematography is beautiful and inventive, and I can’t
imagine why it wasn’t nominated. The make-up is great, and the Oscar-winning
visual effects are good, for the limited amount they’re used. Above all, we must
mention Margaret Rutherford in the juicy role of Madame Arcati. Imagine having
this film eligible at the Academy Awards and not voting her in for a supporting
actress nomination. She is funny and great and should’ve been up for the award.
I give it: 7.5/10
