The Player (1992) - 2nd time
Best Director: Robert Altman
Best Adapted Screenplay
Best Editing
I admire most of Robert Altman’s films rather than loving them (Gosford Park is the exception, I adore it), and The Player almost falls in that category. It has nice potential and a great start, but the screenplay disappoints when not creating proper tension, nor maintaining any interest we might have in the leading performance. The hero is an asshole, and while Tim Robbins does a good job, there’s no real likeability beneath the surface, that would make us more invested in his fate.
What we end up with is a parade of cameos and almost-cameos, thrown in there without a specific purpose, and a journey and a love story I didn’t care much about. Some supporting actors work better than others, and what does go on inside the studio walls makes for the little interest I had in the story.
I give it: 6/10
