In the context of that year, The Favourite was probably my favourite film of 2018, and I was happy to discover today that it’s just as good. The writing is exquisite, and while it takes liberties with the personal lives of its characters, it’s beautifully put together, combining dark humour with drama, finding the right balance and creating a whole bunch of memorable characters.

The three women are superb, and yes, they’re all lead, in my opinion. This is easily a career-best performance for Emma Stone, a return to fine form for Rachel Weisz, and I truly believe Olivia deserved the win. She delivers both the comedy and the immense heartbreak and suffering of the character. The guys aren’t bad either. It’s a daring film, boldly directed.
