The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938)
Nominated for 4 Academy Awards:
Best Picture
Best Editing (WON)
Best Music, Original Score (WON)
Best Art Direction (WON)
I’ve got to say I was very surprised by this film, how entertaining
it is as an adventure film and how well it’s made, especially considering it’s
over 80 years old. I chose it because I wanted to see a Best Picture nominee I
had never seen, but also one that’s not a drama, and at the same time I had
never actually seen an Errol Flynn movie. And you can tell why he was so
successful: the good looks, the youth, the charm, the athleticism. Some of the stunts
he did were impressive and his ability with the sword was just wow.
And yet the success lies in the way it’s directed and how
simple but effective the screenplay is. The film looks good, sounds good and it’s
also a charming, uplifting story. Olivia is terribly sweet as Maid Marian.
I give it: 8.5/10
