Snow Falling on Cedars (1999)

The critics must be crazy. How else would you explain the
44/100 score this has on Metacritic? It’s not a great film, and I didn’t LIKE-LIKE
it, but a bad film it’s not. It’s a serious drama, mostly well-written, not
perfectly directed. But it has a catchy start, and I was actually curious to
see what happens.
Sure, it has its flaws. It has the white savior
complex, and it stumbles too much in the love story, when it should focus more
on the mystery. But it’s watchable. And let me mention Max von Sydow and his very
impressive monologue scene, he would’ve been an Oscar contender in any other
year. All the supporting actors are good, Ethan Hawke less so.
I give it: 7/10
