Looking for Mr. Goodbar (1977)
Nominated for 2 Academy Awards:
Best Supporting Actress: Tuesday Weld
Best Cinematography
I watched this film because I was curious about Tuesday’s
acting nomination, I don’t think I’d seen her before, I know she was a teen
star in the late 50s. I was also curious about Diane Keaton; this film came out
the same year she won the Oscar for Annie Hall, and I know some people
were saying had she not been nominated for Annie Hall, this would’ve
been a sure alternative.
And I can’t say that I agree with that, she is OK in the
film, but the role and the performance feel… incomplete. At the end of the film
I am not sure I could tell what this woman was all about. It’s a film about lust
and a woman’s (almost destructive) sexual explorations, but they’re presented mostly
on the surface, hinting towards trauma, but not exploiting enough the passion
and what it means for her. It’s a dramatic story, loosely inspired by a real case,
but with a problematic ending and I worry about the message it’s trying to
send.
Also, Tuesday Weld is fine, but quite forgettable, not
exactly worthy of a nomination. That was one of the weakest Best Supporting
Actress races ever.
I give it: 6/10
