Butterflies Are Free (1972)
Nominated for 3 Academy Awards:
Best Supporting Actress: Eileen Heckart (WON)
Best Cinematography
Best Sound
This film filled my heart with so much joy and love. I had
avoided it for years, expecting it to be sadder, but I was wrong, because while
it’s sad, there’s so much light and positivity in it, it just left me wanting
to be in love. The cast helps. Goldie is good, but Eileen Heckart is absolutely
amazing playing the mother, and Edward Albert is superb, in & out, and so
right for the part. He sells the story and the kindness and purity of the
character.
Without having seen the play, I can tell it must be an
amazing one, because the dialogue is so good, and the story is built so
beautifully. It is heartbreaking at times, so it did break my heart a bit, but
it’s also uplifting. A wonderful discovery.
I give it: 9.5/10
Watched this some months back - while I definitely did not like the film as much as you did, I agree that Heckart is very great!
