At Eternity's Gate (2018)
Nominated for 1 Academy Award:
Best Actor: Willem Dafoe
At Eternity’s Gate is an overdirected mess in bright
colours. Willem Dafoe is about 30 years older than Vincent van Gogh was at that
time in history, and you would rightfully call that some really uninspired
casting. While he is very committed to the performance (long speeches,
monologues about life and art and what not…), he lacks the angst of youth, and
I couldn’t really shake off the miscast.
There is too much directing and not enough inspired
choices, the editing is odd, and the dialogues feel too explanatory and artificial.
I give it: 5/10
