Zelig (1983) - 2nd time
Nominated for 2 Academy Awards:
Best Cinematography
Best Costume Design
It’s my impression that Woody Allen’s mockumentary Zelig
remains fairly underseen and underrated, both by the public and also by the
Academy back in the day. It’s probably Woody’s most complicated and complex
directing effort and definitely his most undervalued. The screenplay is
creative and funny, with Zelig being one of his smartest films, but he’s
at his best when he’s in the director’s chair.
To create the amazing vintage look, they used cameras and
sound equipment from the 1920s, combined with real footage, to give the documentary
an authentic feel and the final result is an amazing visual achievement. The
humour in the writing has a more delicate wit, and I especially loved the
subtle mockery of psychiatry.
It should’ve received nominations for Best Director and Best
Original Screenplay and it probably should have won Cinematography.
I give it: 8.5/10
