The Preacher's Wife (1996) - 2nd time
Nominated for 1 Academy Award:
Best Music, Original Musical or Comedy Score
Why am I watching (again) a light Christmas Christian movie?
I don’t have the answer, other than I wanted to hear Whitney sing, and see her
on screen, and try to remember the chemistry she had with Denzel. The
Preacher’s Wife holds no value in the history of cinema, but it’s a typical
family-friendly romantic American drama, that only the 90s could’ve provided.
It’s idealistic, naive, but also sweet and easy to watch.
This adaptation (or remake of the 1947 film) might play like
a Hallmark movie at times, but it also kind of works because all the lead
characters are very lovable. It’s a change of pace for Denzel, to see him in
such a sweet role, and while the screenplay only hints a backstory for the
character, he makes the most out of it. Whitney and Courtney B. Vance also give
good performances. And she gets to sing gospel, of course.
I give it: 6.5/10
