It would be mean of me to say that, just like any other film
featuring her, Hugo works better when Chloë Grace Moretz is not in the
scene.😛 But the truth is, while the star
of Hugo is the boy, I might have liked it more had the film been only
about the grown-ups. There’s something about Scorsese trying so hard to make a
cute-sy PG-rated film that lands a bit fake. Especially when you stuff the
screenplay with so much information about the history of cinema and Georges
Méliès. Who is this film for and what is it trying to say?
Those would be my main issues with Hugo. Other than
that, it’s so visually appealing, beautifully scored and Ben Kingsley & Helen
McCrory do elevate the film in terms of acting. Gorgeous production design, it
didn’t deserve the Visual Effects win, but fine, and while is definitely stole
the Cinematography Oscar from The Tree of Life, you can tell the level
of difficulty was high.
With big ambitions about 3D, Hugo ended up with a huge
overrun budget, that made it a box office flop. It’s by no means a bad film,
but it’s hard to be really excited about it.
I give it: 7.5/10
