Is this my favourite film ever? Top 5 for sure.
How come it gets better with every viewing, every couple of
years? I am probably alone on this, because I don’t know anyone else who loves
it as much as I do. When I first saw it, maybe 10-15 years ago, it made me look
at cinema differently. It’s a simple story, but you can feel the director’s
presence, it’s minimalistic, but also playful. It has iconic music, gorgeous editing
(!) and cinematography, beautiful actors playing beautiful people who have beautiful
jobs and beautiful children, and sad stories, and find each other.
The director was only 28 years old when he did the film, and
that’s remarkable, because with time, and seeing it again and again, you
realize how intricate the directing is. The last 30 minutes are superb, and
lovely, and magic. And the actors, well… Jean-Louis Trintignant’s character is
a goal.
if anyone reads this, and sees it, and doesn’t love it, don’t
blame me. 😊 Art is subjective.
(also, for those who've seen it, I've just realized what's up with this poster 😉 and how it relates to the film; surprising)
I give it: 10/10
