A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1966)
Nominated for 1 Academy Award:
Best Music, Scoring of Music, Adaptation or Treatment (WON)
Inspired by a series of farces, and based on the Broadway musical
hit, the film plays like a screwball comedy. The person who put stories together
and plot lines to create this musical had a real gift for it. They intertwine
in unexpected ways, creating plenty of absurd comedy moments. In a way, and especially
towards the end, it felt like I was watching a Benny Hill show.
And that’s not necessarily a bad thing, because the film IS
funny, and I did laugh a couple of times. It’s silly and not to be taken
seriously at all. But it lacks polish and it has no real cinematic vision from
the director. The film could’ve looked better and they could’ve paid more
attention to details. The second problem is, unfortunately, the lead. I watched
this film for Zero Mostel, but it’s clear to see he is way too old for the
part.
I give it: 6.5/10
