Marie Antoinette (2006) - 2nd time
Best Costume Design (WON)
This film is a must-see, not because it’s a masterpiece, but
because it’s one of the few films that were granted this much access to Versailles.
The location is shot as superbly as it is in real life, with an extra touch of
glamour. The set decoration is superb, and the costumes are magnificent. The
film looks delicious and it’s an explosion of opulence.
Unfortunately, I cannot say the same about the way it sounds.
😊 When we get to listen to classical music, it’s
a delight, but I cannot approve of the director’s choice of including contemporary
music, with rock or pop or whatever that was. Modern elements included in
period pieces simply distract me. I get it, Sofia Coppola wanted to make it fun
(it is), and cool (it is), but bringing it to the 21st century through
music and more modern dialogue doesn’t sell the fantasy of the story.
Maybe that’s why I resonated more with the final chapter,
which is more melancholic and more dramatic. Marie Antoinette is a
special film, with an almost Malick vibe, unfortunately it was a box-office
flop and it was also underappreciated by critics. It’s gorgeous to look at, I
still like it, but I think it would’ve been a great success had it played more
like a regular drama.
I give it: 8/10
