Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles (1994) - 3rd time(?)
Best Art Direction
Best Music, Original Score
Picture it: Bucharest, mid-1990s. I am taken weekly to the
VHS rental store and there is the tape, with Tom on the cover, haunting me. A
couple of years later, they were showing it all the time on HBO, and as a
pre-teen I adored it even from the trailer. It had all the right elements:
vampires, actors I knew, amazing sets and a statue that blinked (!) 😄 - remember that?.
I have such fond memories of it, that it’s hard to be
objective. As I look at it today, it’s still visually striking and cool and it excels
on many technical aspects, but the direction is flawed, the editing’s strange
and the acting... uneven. Tom is wrong for the part and the film only gets better
when he’s not around. A very young Kirsten Dunst is the best of all, making
Claudia a fascinating character and the only one to care about.
I give it: 7/10
