Father of the Bride (1950)
Nominated for 3 Academy Awards:
Best Picture
Best Actor: Spencer Tracy
Best Writing, Screenplay
I feel like everyone knows the remake of this film, with
Steve Martin and Diane Keaton. Having seen that played on TV a million times, I
always wondered how the original would be. I was a bit hesitant,
because, despite the shocking Best Picture nomination, in the iconic year of
1950 nonetheless, I was expecting a cutesy, flat movie, and what I got was
indeed cute, but it was also quite funny. 😊 I laughed more times than I expected, mostly
because it doesn’t take itself seriously, it doesn’t push any romantic narrative
too much, and knows how to utilize Spencer Tracy in a grumpy way that also
makes him likeable.
The screenplay is sharp enough and probably the only
nomination it would objectively deserve, but this entire thing made for a relaxing
movie experience. There’s great chemistry between the actors and it helps that
Liz is so beautiful to look at.
I give it: 8/10
