I really didn’t
remember much about this film, after having seen it on TV decades ago. Thought
it would be something light, ideally funny, with many old actors, some from the
golden era. And, while the actors were fine, the film was mostly a missed opportunity.
The roles aren’t written sharp enough to guarantee memorable performances, and overall
there’s little that makes sense story-wise, especially in the second half.
The film becomes a series of random decisions, that aren’t
backed up by logic or by real character motivation. Don Ameche’s Oscar win was
pure sentimental, as there is nothing great about the role or his acting, which
is just ok, but it doesn’t even justify a nomination, let alone a win. However,
as a gentleman who was doing films as far back as the 1930s, they granted him
this mostly-honorary recognition. If there was one performance that stood
out just a bit it was Jack Gilford’s, who had a lot of heart put into it.
I give it: 5/10.
