Alien 3 (1992) - 2nd time
Nominated for 1 Academy Award:
Best Visual Effects
It was only normal to get to the 3rd film,
because luckily enough this one also received an Oscar nomination. 😊
Its director, THE David Fincher, in his feature film debut, hates this. He
hates it, disowns it, because of a very troubled shooting and his conflict with
the studio. What we end up is a mixed bag, that relies a lot on the ties we
have with the previous films, with Ripley, with the alien. The biggest victim
of the messy shooting is the screenplay, which is very uneven, with many loose
ends, and doesn’t do justice to the characters.
Even so, it was entertaining to watch. The setting is
special, claustrophobic and placing it in a prison gives it an interesting
edge. Memorable art direction, average visual effects. Sigourney gives a good
performance, without the help of the writing. I remember clearly a scene where
the dialogue is just absurd and doesn’t feel in the spirit of the character.
There is some sort of depersonalization of Ripley taking place, and that was hard
to witness, because she is everything the series is about. I’m giving it a high
rating, because I love the series so much. 😊
PS: A special shout-out to Charles S. Dutton, who is remarkable.
