Alien (1979) - 2nd time

Nominated for 2 Academy Awards:

Best Art Direction
Best Visual Effects (WON)

First, it’s worth mentioning that the version I saw was the remastered theatrical release, not the director’s cut. I am sure there’s quite the length difference between the two, but I went with the official one. Not much to say here, because the film is close to perfection. It is actually much more majestic than I remembered it to be, and I hadn’t seen it in 15-20 years. It was a game changer for the sci-fi-horror genre back then and it still stands strong, as seen today in 2020.

This was only the second feature film from Ridley Scott, and it must have been quite intimidating to make your career-best movie so early in the game. The cinematography, the score, the visual effects and especially the production design/art direction/set decoration are amazing. We must also consider it’s the film that first gave us the iconic look of the alien brand, of that futuristic universe and of the alien itself.

I love the story, also the female empowerment element, Sigourney is perfectly cast, and so are the supporting actors. It was tense and intense to watch, even though I knew what would happen. Credit to the sharp directing, it really is Ridley’s best.

I give it: 10/10
